Diving in Lebanon

What People Don’t Expect (From an Instructor’s Perspective)

By Instructor Wael

When people think about scuba diving, their minds usually go straight to tropical destinations.

Clear blue water, coral reefs, and faraway islands.

Lebanon is not always the first place that comes to mind.

But after years of diving and teaching along the Lebanese coast, I can say this:

👉 Diving in Lebanon surprises almost everyone.

The First Impression

One of the most common things I hear after a first dive is:

“I didn’t expect it to be like this.”

Many assume the Mediterranean is:

  • Too polluted
  • Too empty
  • Or not clear enough

And to be fair, many people only hear about the less ideal conditions.

But with the right planning and local knowledge, diving in Lebanon can offer clear water, interesting underwater landscapes, and a surprisingly enjoyable experience.

In areas like Jounieh and along the coast, visibility and underwater life often exceed expectations.

It’s Not the Red Sea—and That’s the Point

Lebanon is not the Red Sea.

And it shouldn’t be compared that way.

What we have here is different:

  • Rocky underwater landscapes
  • Natural formations shaped over time
  • Shipwrecks and artificial reefs that add character to the dives
  • A more raw and authentic environment

As an instructor, I see this as an advantage.

Because it teaches divers something deeper:

👉 To adapt, observe, and truly understand their surroundings.

Real Conditions Create Real Divers

Diving in Lebanon is real.

We don’t always have perfect, postcard-like conditions.

And that’s exactly why it’s valuable.

Students learn:

  • Control
  • Awareness
  • Confidence in real environments

Over time, this builds divers who are not just certified—but capable.

The Moment Everything Changes

For first-time divers, the biggest shift happens in the first few minutes underwater.

At the surface:

  • There’s hesitation
  • Questions
  • Sometimes a bit of stress

But once they:

  • Take a few calm breaths
  • Realize everything is under control
  • Start observing their surroundings

Something changes.

They relax.

And from that moment, the experience becomes something completely different.

More Than Just a Dive

Diving here is not only about what you see.

It’s about how you feel during the dive.

The slower breathing.
The reduced noise.
The focus on simple movements.

In a fast-paced environment, even a single dive can feel like a reset.

Not an escape—but a pause.

A Different Kind of Appreciation

Over time, divers who continue in Lebanon develop something deeper than just skill.

They develop appreciation.

For:

  • Small details
  • Changing conditions
  • The simplicity of being underwater

And that, in my experience, is what makes diving here special.

Final Thought

Lebanon may not be the first destination that comes to mind for diving.

But for those who try it, it often becomes something unexpected.

Something real.

Something honest.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what makes it memorable.
