– The Essential Diving Courses
The four following courses are the ones which most dive professionals view as the essential core of diving. In an ideal world they would be done in the order we have presented them.
- Open Water Diver is where your lifetime of diving will begin. During this course you learn the basics of diving and are certified to dive to 18 meters upon completion.
- Advanced Adventurer comes next, once you have gotten a few dives under your belt. During this course you learn more specalised skills. We recommend that the dives include navigation, buoyancy and deep. If the deep dive is done you will be certified to dive to 30 meters.
- Diver Stress & Rescue is where you learn to look after yourself and others in the water. You should be a comfortable and competent diver before you start this course.
- Deep Diver is the final step in the recreational divers depth progression, from here you will move onto technical diving if you choose to dive deeper. Before starting this class you should have some experience of diving to 30 meters and will be certified to dive to 40 meters upon successful completion.
– Expanding Your Diving Knowledge and Skills
Specialty courses can be done at anytime during your dive career progression, some, such as Enriched Air Nitrox and Computer Diving, are done along side the Open water Course. Others, such as Advanced Wreck, are for later on when a diver has gained more experience.
– Earning SSI Free Recognition Ratings
How can I earn the free recognition ratings
SSI has created a series of recognition levels which a diver can earn along their path. These levels are based on courses taken and the number of dives the diver has completed.

Taking a specific number of SSI Specialties and continuing your pursuit of dives, allows you to earn higher levels of diver ratings. SSI ‘s ratings are the only ratings in the industry that combine training and experience requirements, proving that SSI ratings are truly earned
It is up to you to decide how far you want to go. And the best part is recognition at SSI is free! Complete your Specialty Programs with the applicable SSI Specialty certification card and receive the SSI Recognition Ratings.
